Stars of the Town 2018 Celebrated

CantonHS-JazzComboThe 4th Annual Stars of the Town 2018 was a noteworthy success. Over 80 Chamber members and guests attended the star-studded event on November 1st at the Farmington Woods Golf Club. The Canton High School Jazz Combo, lead by Tigger Kluessendorf, played in the background while guests mingled during the cocktail hour.

New Slate of Officers & Directors Elected

An excellent dinner followed a brief business meeting to elect the new slate of Officers and Directors. Shawn Cole, Owner of Collinsville Yoga Center, was elected President, and Liz Ackerman, General Manager of The Shoppes at Farmington Valley, as Vice-President. President Gary Roman, CEO of Collinsville Savings Society, moves to Immediate Past-President.

The main event commenced following dinner. President Gary Roman acted as the Emcee. Twenty members were recognized with certificates for 5, 10, 15 and 20 years of Chamber membership. Sixteen members received commemorative acrylic desk blocks for 25 and 30 years. In between each presentation, door prizes provided by member businesses were presented registered guests selected at random.

2018 Business of the Year Award

JayKaplan-JoeDeFeoJayKaplan-PlaqueRoaring Brook Nature Center was presented the 2018 Business of the Year Award. Joe DeFeo, of The Children’s Museum, spoke on behalf of Jay Kaplan, Nature Center Director, who received the award. Joe spoke at length about Jay’s dedication to the center and all the recent improvements resulting from the renovation and expansion project graciously accepted the plaque and spoke about his time at the Nature Center.

2018 Service to the Community Award

ChuckJoseph-ClaireCoteClaireCote-PlaqueClaire Cote, Director of Senior and Social Services for the Town of Canton, received the 2018 Service to the Community Award. Chuck Joseph, owner of ShopRite of Canton, gave a heartfelt introduction describing his work with Claire as the Chamber President and the various activities of the Joseph Family efforts to reduce hunger in Canton. Chuck detailed the myriad of hats worn by Claire as she carries out her duties with seniors, the food and fuel banks, veterans, families in need, drug prevention, and numerous others. Claire thanked everyone and spoke briefly about her passion for her job.

2018 Service to the Business Community Award

CarolAckerman-KathyTaylorKathyTaylor-PlaqueThe 2018 Service to the Business Community Award was new this year and expressly created to honor Kathy Taylor, manager of @Collinsville. Carol Ackerman, owner of Carol & Company, hailed Kathy as the behind the scenes leader of most activities in Collinsville and the Collinsville Merchants group. Kathy has been instrumental in the planning of events, such as, Collinsville HOT, Christmas in Collinsville, Sip ‘n Shop, etc. Kathy was very gratified by her recognition and thanked everyone for supporting her, especially following a recent personal tragedy.

ShawnCole-GaryRoman-AxeThe final event of the evening was the traditional presentation of a Collins Company Axe to the outgoing Chamber President, Gary Roman, by President-Elect, Shawn Cole. Shawn thanked Gary for his two and a half year term and spoke briefly about future plans for the Chamber.
